CVT CASE DRAIN

First off, with less than an hour on the ATV, I installed a drain for the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) case. I found several ideas how to do this on the net, those being listed it the links section, special thanks to badbart at Aurora Wheelers forum for giving me the idea of using a valve stem for a drain valve.
Procedure:

You have to remove the left floorboard to get to the CVT case to do this. The cover will come off without removing the floorboard but you could not reinstall the case with the stem attached.

I found the cover has an interesting rubber gasket (right, all images can be clicked on for a bigger pic). It has a tongue that slips into a groove in the cover. PROBLEM here is the groove is too wide and the tongue is too long. I think this is why you see so many posts about the casing leaking. When the case is tightened against the motor it would seem the rubber is going to crinkle, snake, or otherwise deform because the rubber is too long for the depth of the groove. When I reinstalled the cover I did notice it wasn't even all the way around. I'm sure this is why we are seeing some ATVs that leak and some that don't. It's a crapshoot.

100% I don't know if mine would have leaked or not but I used hi temp rtv silicone and added it to the groove. I debated to cut the gasket tongue so in would seat better, but better judgment (and to be sure not to void the warranty) made me just add sealant in the groove.

I did not use sealant where the case meets the engine in case I'll need to get in there again it won't be such a mess to take apart. 

Back to the job at hand. I bought a rubber valve stem, removed the needle and used a drill bit to ream the hole to the size of the stem inside. The size I used called for a .453 size hole which translated to 29/64 drill bit for the hole in the case.

The location of the hole on the case is almost at the very lowest point, just outside the rear pulley. Be careful you do not try to put the drain directly below the pulley, I don't think there is room for it in line with the pulley. There is a brace between the pulleys where others have added their drain but it lines up with the case bolt and the footrest brace comes into play on the Max too.

After pulling the stem into the hole in the case, I trimmed a little of the rubber off the inside of the stem so it would drain more water if I ever need to.

You can see in the pic on the left the valve stem is relatively centered between the floorboard braces. Reassemble the cover on the ATV.

Next step is you have to make a hole in the inboard of the foot rest that slides under the casing. You cannot see this without looking under the ATV once assembled. I used a 1 1/4" hole saw but you can easily cut the plastic with whatever you have handy.

Reassemble the footrest. Your done.

 

NOTES: Just be sure to PUT THE VALVE STEM CAP ON!

When I get my full skid plate I need to remember to drill an access hole in the aluminum skid. Done, drilled a 2" hole in the Ricochet Skid Plate for access.
